I enjoyed listening to the lecture and her Five Point criteria.
The picture on Zoom never materialized, but I could hear every word, which was the important part.

Appreciate the positive feedback, Karen. Thank you. LInda can give you a bit of assist, perhaps do a mock presentation, to make sure you get the picture.

I enjoyed it but I thought we would get more amplification from her on the issues the media has with disinformation and what they are doing about it.

The talk was very interesting and the speaker was excellent. Could media run stories through a filter so that something like the Good House Keeping seal of approval was attached to truthful stories that had been verified as opposed to having us question every news story? An independent fact checking agency would give a lot of people peace of mind.

Thanks to Robin Fields for a most informative presentation – Surviving in an Age of Disinformation. These days it has become almost a requirement to make a true/false decision for each piece of information we encounter. Using your guidance and pointers, the process of information sorting can be put to a test. In the question/answer section of the program, Greg Sanders did a terrific job of presenting the question, and the answers from Robin were excellent.

I was very impressed with the smoothness of the production and reception. Very professional.

The guest speaker was very relaxed and impressive. I no longer have any reservation on this approach for the WACD and our audience.

I hope you get lots more positive responses.

We felt that the opening remarks provided by the speaker regarding the disinformation subject were too brief and missed examples of good and bad practices readily found today from public and private sector sources. Her check list for self-determination did not include independent website verification sources (e.g., snopes.com and truthorfiction.com). Our particular question regarding principles, guidance and governance needed to mitigate the problem at federal and state levels was not really addressed.

Her responses to the Q&A session were smooth for the most part, leading us to pay more attention to those media sources that: (a) distinguish fact from opinion; (b) remain accountable; (c) are not partisan; etc. These filtering factors were likely in our collective mindsets already.

On balance, this was a very good session, noting that this is a difficult subject, and one that WACD has not previously ventured into. Disinformation will be with us forever, especially given the continued maturity of the Internet and multiplicity of domestic and foreign sources. We would like this subject to remain on the agenda, with speakers that can add further insights to our understanding of it.

Good feedback, Allen. I agree with you regarding her opening remarks; they did miss the major issues of the day.

This type of topic, as you mentioned, is not one we have addressed in the past. It does represent an example of our interest in delivering a wider range of subjects beyond the traditional global affairs subjects traditionally presented by the WACD, or many WACs. Virtual programming makes this possible because 1) we are able to attract a wider range of speakers than before, and 2) our WAC will be delivering more total programs than ever before.

I also agree that this subject is important and bears watching and revisiting in the near future.

Yet another very enjoyable talk! Thank you!

When our speaker was introduced her membership in the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) was mentioned as one of her credentials so during the Q&A I asked if her organization required all their journalist to be members.

During the early 1980’s I worked in broadcast journalism and was encouraged by my employer to join SPJ but it was not required as condition of my employment.

I am a Realtor now and am often surprised by how many people do not realize that membership in the Realtor Association is not required to practice real estate. It is however, required as a condition of employment by most if not all other major brokerage firms. Membership signifies a commitment to the very highest standards of ethical business conduct.

The Realtor Association as a self-regulating entity evolved out of a crisis in public confidence similar to what the journalism profession is experiencing now. It would seem that the journalism profession would also benefit by if management of news gathering organizations followed a similar model.
